Industrial retrofitting: when upgrading is more cost-effective than replacing
At SILLEM, giving historic machines a new lease on life is an integral part of our philosophy.
Purchasing a polishing system is a significant investment; however, with SILLEM equipment, time takes on a different value. Thanks to high-quality design and robust engineering, our systems are built for the long haul.
In fact, it is common for the first major interventions to become necessary only 25–30 years after installation, primarily due to the obsolescence of electrical components and automation systems, rather than mechanical wear.
Our customers have long recognized the legendary durability of SILLEM mechanics. This is precisely why we offer specialized retrofitting and technological upgrades for industrial polishing systems, designed to boost performance and further extend their operating life.
Samuel Groves, the historic English cookware manufacturer founded in 1817, recently opted for this approach. They transformed a SILLEM machine built in 1995 into a technologically advanced system that is simple to operate while remaining incredibly stable from a mechanical standpoint.
Originally designed for the internal polishing of stainless steel pans, the machine is now equipped to handle modern materials such as tri-ply, which is increasingly prevalent in the premium cookware sector.

The intervention was substantial yet non-invasive regarding the mechanical structure, which remained in excellent condition. The upgrade focused primarily on the complete replacement of the automation suite with latest-generation SIEMENS components.
This update introduced a completely revamped control system, featuring a mobile touch-screen interface and remote production monitoring capabilities. The result is a 1990s machine that is now fully compliant with Industry 4.0 standards, ensuring greater flexibility, ease of use, and consistent finishing quality.
By bringing performance up to modern standards, this retrofit extends the system’s lifespan by another 25–30 years—achieving current performance levels with a significantly lower investment than purchasing a brand-new industrial polishing machine.
SILLEM understands the enduring value of the machines built throughout its long history. we listen to our customers’ needs and offer solutions that don’t always require “starting from scratch,” but instead enhance and modernize existing assets wherever possible.
